    What is this course about?

In a world where odd perceptions often drive our choices, understanding the dynamics of risk communication and decision-making is paramount. Led by esteemed instructor Jonathan Klane, this course is designed to empower you with the knowledge and skills to navigate the intricate landscape of risk perception and decision-making.

In today's fast-paced world, our affective risk system often takes the lead, influencing our choices more than we realize. Understanding the interplay between our analytical and experiential risk systems is key to making informed decisions that align with our goals and values.

What are the benefits of this course?

    • Differentiate between analytical (logical) and experiential (affective) risk systems: Gain insights into how these systems shape our perceptions and drive our decisions, sometimes in surprising ways.
    • Explore the vast spectrum of risk perceptions: From the weird to the wildly varying, uncover the factors that influence how we perceive and respond to risks in our lives.
    • Identify and mitigate cognitive biases: Equip yourself with the knowledge to recognize and overcome common biases that can cloud judgment and lead to suboptimal decision-making.
    • Understand system 1 (fast) vs. system 2 (slow) thinking: Learn to harness the power of both intuitive and deliberate thought processes to make more deliberate and effective choices.
    • Decode "judgment under uncertainty": Unravel the complexities of decision-making in uncertain situations, and discover strategies to navigate ambiguity with confidence.
    • Harness the power of storytelling in risk communication: Discover why stories are a compelling and effective tool for communicating complex risks, and learn how to craft narratives that resonate with your audience

What are the learning outcomes of this course?

By the end of this course, engaged learners should be able to:

    • Compare and contrast our analytical (logical) risk system vs. our experiential (affective) risk system
    • Describe our weirdly, widely, and wildly varying risk perceptions
    • List at least seven cognitive biases that affect our decisions
    • Compare and contrast system 1 (fast) vs. system 2 (slow) thinking
    • Explain the meaning behind the phrase “judgment under uncertainty”
    • Defend the use of stories for communicating risk
