    What is this course about?

Welcome to Chemical Hygiene, where we delve into the essential aspects of handling chemicals in laboratory and research settings. In this dynamic online course, you will explore the diverse hazards and risks associated with various chemicals, from the obvious to the concealed. Led by expert instructor Jonathan Klane, you will navigate through six critical chemical hygiene categories: flammables/combustibles, corrosives, oxidizers, reactives, asphyxiants, and toxins.

Whether you're a seasoned researcher, a curious student, or an aspiring lab technician, Chemical Hygiene is your passport to a safer, more secure laboratory experience.

What are the benefits of this course?

    • Understanding Chemical Hazards: Delve into the six major chemical hygiene categories, including flammables/combustibles, corrosives, oxidizers, reactives, asphyxiants, and toxins. Learn to identify and mitigate risks, both apparent and hidden.
    • Body Defense Systems: Explore the four routes of entry for chemicals into the body and discover at least four different target organ toxicities. Jonathan Klane will walk you through real-world examples, shedding light on the importance of protecting vital organs from harmful substances.
    • Hierarchy of Hazard Controls: Master the application of hazard controls, from elimination and substitution to engineering controls and personal protective equipment (PPE). Gain practical insights into selecting the most effective control measures for various chemical hazards.
    • Lab Safety Protocols: Unravel the purposes of essential lab safety documents and understand the pivotal roles that contribute to a culture of safety in laboratory environments.
    • Additional Resources: Expand your toolkit with a comprehensive list of additional chemical hygiene resources, empowering you to stay informed and up-to-date on best practices in the field.

What are the learning outcomes of this course?

By the end of this course, engaged learners should be able to:

    • List and describe each of the major hazard categories
    • Explain the four routes of entry into the body and at least four different target organ toxicities, including an example toxic substance for each organ
    • Apply the hierarchy of hazard controls to chemical hazards
    • Give examples of different hazard control approaches
    • List the purposes of typical lab safety documents
    • Describe the roles that contribute to safety
    • List other useful chemical hygiene resources
